Records kept by the medical officer of Shackleton’s second expedition to the Antarctic show that he was struck be repeated attacks of breathlessness.

One hundred years ago today, Sir Ernest Shackleton lay trapped on an Antarctic ice floe, facing a terrifying 720 mile open sea journey to safety which would see him feted among Britain’s bravest explorer.

With his ship lost, the adventurer crossed the Southern Ocean in a tiny lifeboat, sleeping on a bed of ballast stones and experiencing near starvation and dehydration to bring help to his crew.
